Global shipowners body sets out industry principles to combat harassment and bullying

• The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) launches ‘Industry principles for establishing effective measures to combat and eliminate harassment and bullying in the maritime sector.’ • The free industry guidance sets out five high level and eight detailed principles to successfully address the issue. • ICS submitted the principles to shipping’s global UN regulators, the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO), ahead of a joint meeting alongside governments, shipowners and unions.

Zero Emission Shipping Fund proposal submitted to UN to deliver on shipping’s net zero targets

• The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, and the Republic of Liberia submit detailed proposal to UN IMO for a Zero Emission Shipping Fund to accelerate transition to net zero by 2050. • Fund will incentivise accelerated production and uptake of zero GHG marine fuels and technologies and provide billions of dollars to support transition in developing countries. • Governments urged to approve fit-for-purpose proposals to meet their commitment to adopt a maritime GHG emissions pricing mechanism in 2025.

ICS publishes highly anticipated Flag State Performance Table

• Updated Flag State Performance Table shows an increase in positive performance indicators amongst smaller Flag States. • Flag States that have a majority of negative indicators highlights the need to encourage shipowners and operators to examine whether a Flag State has sufficient substance before using it. • Ship operators in dialogue with maritime Administrations are recommended to use the Table to identify areas for further improvement over the next twelve months.

• At the Shaping the Future of Shipping: Delivering a Net Zero World summit a course was set to deliver on the International Maritime Organization’s net zero strategy. • The industry flagship summit convened over 300 maritime and energy sector leaders and key stakeholders, from 30 countries, across the supply chain along with six governments leaders during COP28 at the iconic Museum of the Future.

Simplified Global GHG Fuel Standard for marine fuels put forward to help meet net zero target

• The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) and the International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA) have joined forces to submit a proposal for a simplified Global GHG Fuel Standard for the next round of International Maritime Organization (IMO) greenhouse gas negotiations. • The ICS/IBIA proposal provides for a crucial streamlined voluntary “energy pooling compliance mechanism” to address the possibility of fuel producers being unable to supply new fuels in sufficient quantities. • To ensure agreement at IMO by 2025, industry’s simplified approach will minimise administrative burden for governments, especially for developing countries, whose support will be vital to taking the fuel standard forward globally.

New study launched highlighting the positive impacts of turning down the volume

• New study by the University of Southampton, commissioned by the International Chamber of Shipping, highlights synergies between the implementation of energy efficiency measures and reduction of underwater radiated noise (URN). • In July this year the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 80) endorsed revised non-mandatory International Maritime Organization (IMO) guidelines on the reduction of URN that applies to new and existing ships. • Shipowners and the environment can co-benefit by reducing underwater radiated noise.
